In 1983, he joined Sun Microsystems, where he led the company's Java efforts, rising to the position of chief technology officer and developing an international reputation as a visionary of the information age. In 1997, he was appointed CEO of Novell./nA member of President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Schmidt was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2006 and inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as a fellow in 2007.
