35-year-old Christopher Gutschow and 43-year-old Michael Stasinski allegedly swiped hundreds of bronze containers and urns from grave markers at the local Colonial and Greenwood Cemeteries./nThe men reportedly made at least three visits to the graveyards to steal the urns, which were each valued at about $300 each. Police believe the two males took the metal pieces and sold them to scrap dealers for quick cash.
Law enforcement authorities also think the duo is involved in other cemetery thefts in both Princeton and Robbinsville.
Although the vases and urns have a value of several hundred dollars apiece, scrap dealers usually only pay about $5 for the metal. Captain James Stevens of the Hamilton Township Police Department thinks the suspects destroyed the grave pieces beyond recognition to avoid detection, as scrappers keep a sharp eye out for potential stolen goods which are usually brought to them in pristine condition.
The pair is currently being held on $10,000 bail.
