As the CEO of Google since 2001, Eric Schmidt has overseen its growth from a Silicon Valley startup into the worlds largest search engine.
Schmidt studied electrical engineering as a Princeton undergraduate and earned a Ph.D. in 1982 from the University of California at Berkeley, where he wrote a dissertation on the problems of managing distributed software development and tools for solving those problems.
During his early career he held technical positions with Bell Labs and Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). In 1983, he joined Sun Microsystems, where he led the company's Java efforts, rising to the position of chief technology officer and developing an international reputation as a visionary of the information age. In 1997, he was appointed CEO of Novell.
A member of President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Schmidt was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2006 and inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as a fellow in 2007. He also chairs the board of the New America Foundation and is a former member of Princeton's Board of Trustees.
