100 Spiritual/Free/Avant Jazz, and over 200 20th Century Classical LPs
We have just put out two very interesting collections featuring the more exploratory sides of jazz and classical./nThe first is a great representation of many of the finest, and rarest, examples of free jazz and spiritual jazz. The '70s were a tumultuous time for jazz in general. Swing had come and gone and the mighty bop and post-bop eras had run their course. As rock came to dominate the market, the sales of jazz LPs dwindled. Many of the artists still creating were driven by a passion for their music more than a desire for commercial success. They took the modal form, most popularly identified with Coltrane, as a launching pad to much more experimental music. While it is hard to generalize about these artists and their styles, most seem emotionally driven, and that is reflected in the chaos and peace in their music./nThis collection features titles on Strata-East, India Navigation, Horo, some ESP, and many small/private labels like Kwela, Ak-Ba and others. Some of the major players are Charles Tyler, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, Anthony Braxton, Butch Morris, Don Pullen and many more. These records have been very well-cared for, with the jackets and vinyl in excellent shape. Because of their rarity, many of these records are not cheap, but we have tried to price them fairly if not a little below market value./nHighlights include
Pharoah Sanders "Pharoah", India Navigation IN 1027, $139.99
Albert Ayler "Spiritual Unity", ESP 1002, red print cover, sealed, $119.99
The Heath Brothers "Marchin' ,On" Strata --East SES-19766 , sealed, $119.99
Khan Jamal "Infinity", Jam'Brio Records 001, $119.99
Sun Ra "My Brother the Wind" , Saturn ESR 521, hand-painted, $99.99/nNote that these records are sold first come, first served. Many of these titles are in very high demand, so to be as fair as we can to everyone, please do not call us to ask to put any on hold. For those not familiar with our store, sorry, we are a walk-in store only and do not ship.
_________________________________________________________/nDovetailing nicely with the more experimental side of jazz, we have also just purchased a collection of over 200 20th century classical records. It features a very nice selection of hard-to-find Stockhausen German imports, a rare John Cage box set, some great Xenakis titles and much more. While solidly 20th century, the bulk of this collection is not primarily of the out-there "suite for buzz saw and backward tape" style. It is mostly composed of modern orchestral and chamber music. There are titles by many less-common Eastern European, Russian and Scandinavian composers on labels like D.G, Bis, Melodiya and many other imports. It's very nice to have such a diverse selection in the house./n_________________________________________________________/nSo, if you're in the mood to explore some of the more adventurous aspects of music, it's a great time to visit. We wish a happy summer solstice to you all and hope you get a chance to visit us soon.
