Formerly Undocumented, Long Island Heart Surgeon Hopes for Changes to Immigration Law When Harold Fernandez, a heart surgeon at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, hears stories about undocumented immigrant students on Long Island, he understands why those young people feel helpless. At the age of 13, he came to the US from Colombia without papers, eventually gaining admission and graduating from Princeton University. Throughout his years in college, he remained undocumented, but somehow found ways to continue his education. In this video, he speaks about needing to obtain a fake social security card to apply for college -- the first time he realized the debilitating impact of life in the shadows.
