Designed in the 1930s by architect Thomas Stapleton and funded by Edgar Palmer, Palmer Square was created as a planned Colonial Revival town center directly across from Princeton University and Nassau Hall.

The square is home to the landmark Nassau Inn, originally established in 1756. It hosted key historical figures—including Paul Revere, Thomas Paine, and members of the Continental Congress—when Princeton briefly served as the nation's capital in 1783. Today, the hotel's famous Yankee Doodle Tap Room holds Norman Rockwell's largest mural, Yankee Doodle (1937), and was a frequent hangout for Albert Einstein.

This walk also covers historic Witherspoon Street, the main commercial connection to the Witherspoon-Jackson neighborhood, a vibrant community established by freed Black Americans in the post-Revolutionary era.
