A look at the headstone of Jose and Mary "Kitty" Menendez at historic Princeton Cemetery in Princeton, New Jersey. The polished dark granite marker designates the resting place of the couple whose 1989 deaths became one of the most publicized true-crime cases in American history. Recorded Oct 13, 2026.
Case Overview & Key Facts:
Jose Menendez was a Cuban-born corporate executive who served as CEO of LIVE Entertainment and was an executive at RCA. Mary "Kitty" Menendez was a former schoolteacher. The family lived in Princeton before relocating to Beverly Hills, California, and Jose and Kitty were laid to rest back in Princeton.
On August 20, 1989, Jose and Kitty were fatally shot inside their Beverly Hills home. Police initially explored other possibilities before focusing on their sons, Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were arrested in March 1990.
The brothers were tried in high-profile, televised trials. The defense alleged long-term family abuse, while the prosecution argued the motive was financial inheritance. The first trials in 1993 and 1994, with separate juries, ended in hung juries. The retrial concluded in 1996 with both brothers convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, and they were originally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In 2025, the brothers were resentenced to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole. They were denied parole in August 2025 and remain in prison as of October 2026.
