Who is really getting rich in America — and how are they doing it?
In this interview, I sat down with Owen Zidar, co-author of The Everywhere Millionaire: Who Is Really Rich in America and How They Got There, to explore the rise of America’s “Main Street millionaires.”
Everyone has heard of Elon Musk and Bill Gates but no one has heard of Bob Brockway who spent $60 million on his daughter's wedding or Dick Portillo who started selling hotdogs in Chicago and sold his business for $1 billion. We discuss the entrepreneurs building enormous wealth through businesses that rarely make headlines — including car dealerships, restaurants, construction companies, convenience stores and other privately owned businesses.
Owen explains what the data reveals about where America’s wealthiest business owners live, which industries create the most millionaires, and why the popular image of wealth being concentrated entirely in Silicon Valley and Wall Street misses a major part of the story.
We also discuss entrepreneurship, taxes, geography, business ownership and what these lesser-known millionaires can teach us about building wealth in America.
