"Research and training at America's universities are central to national security and have been since at least World War II. University research contributes both to the science behind weapon systems and to the science behind arms control and deterrence, so those weapons are never used.

University research has led to the development of disciplines that support military operations and diplomacy from the convoys that brought supplies to Europe in World War II, to US policy for managing the end of the Cold War.

Dozens of military officers earn their PhDs from American universities each year, and many of them go on to become leading national security thinkers and policymakers leveraging the knowledge and skills gained through research to strengthen and defend our nation.
