Jill Freedman is the reason I'm a photographer. When I was 15 years old I stepped into a bookstore in Princeton NJ and pulled one book off the shelves: Street Cops by Jill Freedman. The street photography was as gritty as it gets, makes the "reality shows" of today look like Disney movies. I wanted to be just like her.
While I never pursued the photojournalism aspect of photography, her work set the bar for my career, to always get involved with my subjects and pursue images with meaning.
I am so lucky she agreed to let me profile her for my masters thesis over ten years ago. I took her six books and converted them into a multimedia presentation with her voice as the narrator of her own images.
I am uploading each of these videos in the opes of a wider audience seeing her masterful work.
