'Conversation With...' Professor Edward Felten
'Conversation With...' Professor Edward Felten
http://www.princeton.edu/main/news … In a video posted Jan. 26, Edward Felten, a Princeton professor of computer science and public affairs, took part in the second edition of the University's interactive "Conversation With…" series on Facebook. In the first part of this two-part conversation, Felten answers questions and discusses a variety of topics, including how Princeton students can combine academic interests.
"A big part of what Princeton is about is drawing those connections across traditional disciplines," Felten said in the first video. He also described his interest in the many ways computer science and society intersect, particularly regarding the research he and his students have done on the vulnerabilities of electronic voting machines.
In Felten's second video, which will be posted on Princeton's Facebook page next month, he will answer questions posted there during the past month. The topics range from the government's role in policing cyber bullying to some of the policy and ethical questions raised by the website Wikileaks having exposed the names of individual informants in some of the government documents that the site released.
Felten, who started his post as the Federal Trade Commission's first chief technologist this month, is the second featured host for Princeton's "Conversation With..." video series. The series gives the broader community an opportunity to engage with University leaders, faculty, students and alumni on a wide range of topics. The first installment, which appeared in the fall of 2010, featured Dean of Admission Janet Rapelye.

Princeton Green Roofs.
Princeton's Green Roofs... www.princeton.edu … From August 2009 - Faculty, students and staff involved in a monitoring project are measuring the effectiveness of sustainability efforts on the newly installed Butler College green roof.
When 283 Princeton undergraduates move into Butler College this September (2009), they will be entering a 113,000-square-foot complex integrating sustainability features from top to bottom, including the green roofs on more than half of its buildings and a stormwater cistern that will collect and recycle rainwater to irrigate courtyard landscaping./n"Green roofs provide many ecological and aesthetic benefits, from cooling the roof surface, to helping ease the urban heat-island effect, and creating a wildlife habitat," said rising Princeton University senior Jessica Hsu, a civil and environmental engineering major. This summer, she compared temperatures of green and conventional roofs across campus using infrared technology as a Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI) summer intern, along with faculty mentor, Eileen Zerba, a senior lecturer in ecology and evolutionary biology and director of undergraduate laboratories at PEI.

Class Day Keynote Address - Brooke Shields
'Actress Brooke Shields, a 1987 graduate of Princeton, will deliver the keynote address at the University's Class Day ceremony on Monday, May 30.
Leaders of the senior class selected Shields -- known for starring roles in the movies "Blue Lagoon," "Endless Love" and "Sahara," the 1990s TV sitcom "Suddenly Susan," and her advocacy for women who suffer from postpartum depression -- from numerous nominees suggested by their classmates.
In an email to seniors, the Class Day co-chairs wrote: "She is a smart, funny and insightful woman who seeks to use her fame and influence to do good in the world, and we are very excited to hear from her on our special day." Shields can connect with graduating seniors, they added, because she continues to embody "a generation of Princetonians before, during and after her time at Old Nassau."
While at Princeton, Shields majored in Romance language and literatures, with a focus on French literature, and graduated with honors. She was a member of the Princeton Triangle Club, the nation's oldest touring collegiate musical comedy troupe, and one of the independent eating clubs, Cap and Gown.
Before arriving on campus, Shields began her acting career when she was 11 months old, starring in a laundry soap commercial. By the time she enrolled at the University, she had starred in multiple major motion pictures and served as a spokesperson and model for Calvin Klein. In her career after Princeton, she performed on Broadway in "Wonderful Town" and "Chicago," starred in the TV drama "Lipstick Jungle" and wrote "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression."
Class Day, which takes place the day before Princeton's Commencement, is being organized by members of the graduating class. In addition to the address by Shields, the ceremony will include remarks by class members, the induction of honorary class members and the recognition of class members for their contributions'.
